    Christopher Carver (Author)

    Book details

From 1957 to 1980 the country formerly known as Southern Rhodesia and now known as Zimbabwe, was involved in a long and protracted struggle between the ruling European population and the rising African Nationalist Movements for the hand-over of power to the majority Black population. This culminated in an armed conflict from 1964 to 1979 which only ended with the direct intervention of the British Government. They organised a conference held at Lancaster House and elections in which Robert Mugabe came out the winner. Zimbabwe was born. Rhodesia was the last British Colony in Africa to be granted independence. During this decisive period in the history of Africa the author, Christopher Carver, was serving firstly as a Policeman and then as a Personnel Manager to a large manufacturing organisation in Bulawayo. His autobiography tells the story of how the changing political situation in the country had a direct impact on his work and the problems that had to be faced. His story is informative, interesting, exciting and at times highly amusing. There are descriptions of interesting cases he investigated, action against insurgents, plenty of encounters with big game and unusual experiences in the early days of building the Kariba Dam.
